DJ Virman

One-third of the dynamic Coquia brothers, DJ Virman's life is a bit different from his superstar Power Mixer brothers DJ E-man (Power 106 Los Angeles) and DJ Mikee-Mike (Power 92 Phoenix). Although they all grew up in the same house, Virman was the middle kid of the family and what you could call "the rebel". Virman recalls, "I didn't want to be like my big brother, and would get into more trouble than him. Funny because I eventually ended up just like him, a DJ, and I love it!" On the turntables is where he spends most of his time. "I give my brother all the credit for showing me the turntables.”

As his career progresses with the number two station in the country, number one in its market, KPWR Power 106 Los Angeles, Virman aggressively pursues various avenues to unveil his talent. Frequenting headliner spots in L.A.’s nightlife, his style and flavor are becoming the talk of the town. In addition, a joint venture with his equally talented siblings, ROTATIONS RECORD POOL has launched its strong presence in Southern California, Phoenix and the East Coast. Recently, DJ Virman has just been featured on Cornerstone’s Mixtape Volume 59. His debut as Knoc-Turn’Al’s DJ has exposed him to his first national tour joining heavy hitters such as Ludacris, Chingy & David Banner on the “Chicken & Beer Tour.” In recent news, DJ Virman has joined crowd favorite Far*east Movement as their Official DJ! Catch him in da’ mix --- Scratch the Silence!!!

INTERVIEW::
conducted by
 JiZO Jewles

Jizo: When and why did you decide to become a DJ? Did your brother Eman inspire you at all?

Virman: I was actually inspired by a local radio station back in the mid late 80's. The station was called 1580 AM KDAY. That was the first time I ever heard dj's on the radio. Then when E-man got on Power 106 I got more inspired by him knowing I can have a career in djing.

Jizo: What's the meaning of "Virman"?

Virman: Virman is actually my real name. My mom's name is Virginia and my dad's name is Manuel, get it Vir-Man..

Jizo: Is there really a big difference in style between DJ's based on their geographic location (i.e: Westcoast vs. Eastcoast)?

Virman: There is a real big difference in style between Dj's based on there geographic location, One example on how they are different is music or how they play their music. 2nd, dj's on the west coast are more technical with their mixing and scratching.

Jizo: Who was your favorite dj when you started djing?

Virman: I had alot of favorite dj's when I started, Tony G, Julio G, The Beat Junkies, ISP, and my family. Both of my brothers and half of my cousins are dj's.

Jizo: What would be your definition of a "bad mix"?

Virman: Definition of a bad mix to me is not knowing where your cues are meaning not knowing where to throw the record in, if both records are not on beat simple as that, and if you are playing for yourself and not for the crowd. It's a bad mix if you can't rock the party.

Jizo: What do you think about while you're spinning for a party?

Virman: What goes thru my head while I'm spinning for a party is if the crowd is feeling. I vibe off the crowd. The more energy I get from them gets me in the zone.

Jizo: What do you enjoy doing while you're not spinning?

Virman: Sleeping..just kidding. Nah I am a big fan of football. Anything that deals with football I'm there.

Jizo: How did you hook up with Far East Movement and become their "official DJ"?

Virman: A friend of mine knows the manager of Far East Movement. He introduced me to him and the rest was history.

Jizo: Can you tell us about the national "Chicken & Beer" tour? Did you really spin for big names such as Ludacris and Chingy?

Virman:
The Chicken & Beer tour was one of my most memorable experiences. I was the dj for Knocturnal. We were the opening act for the show. We were the ones that just got the show rolling. Being on the same tour with big name artists, you can't go wrong with that.

Jizo: I understand you are also going to school for a Telecommunications Management bachelor degree. Are you going to give up music to pursue a career in IT when you graduate?

Virman: I actually graduated and got my bachelors in that field but music is my passion. That is where my heart is at. I don't think I can ever picture myself doing something where music is not involved. The Telecommunications degree is just an accomplishment I wanted.

Jizo: Thank Virman and keep those remixes coming man.
