Christina Lee

INTERVIEW::
conducted
by
JiZO Jewles

JiZO: How old were you
when you first started singing?
Christina Lee: Gee I
don't know, I started singing ever since I was a
little kid. My mom always told me my range was
ridiculously high and that I was never afraid to
sing out. I remember I would carry around this
sesame street karaoke toy with a mic and sing along
to it. =)
JiZO: When was the
moment that you knew you wanted to become a singer?
Christina Lee: I grew
up listening to music my whole life. It's really
simple, I just heard people's songs play on the
radio one day and thought it was the coolest thing.
I wanted that to be me one day.
JiZO: You've came such
a long way to get where you are right now! How do
you feel about it and what was your motivation to
start putting yourself out there to the public?
Christina Lee: Well I
spent a lot of time working on music at home and
made a few songs with my local producers in the past
but this time I really wanted it to be something
special. The title song, "Hot Like Fire" was
specifically made to perform for the crowd at the
event for SPIN. I've performed in many places before
but never at an actual club! I usually just perform
sitting down by a piano and singing slow r&b, so
this is definitely something new for me! So I
decided to make a song more upbeat and gear it
towards what the crowd might like. It's not quite my
style but I thought I might give it a shot ;) Hope
the crowd enjoyed the performance as much as I did!
I had tons of fun and it was an awesome experience
to be able to perform in front of such a powerful
lively audience!
JiZO: Do you write
your own lyrics and music?
Christina Lee: Yes I am
a singer/songwriter. I feel as though music can get
very emotional at times and I find it a privilege to
write how I feel the song relates to me and that I
can decide myself how I want to present it. It's
what makes me have my own style and individuality.

JiZO: What are your
influences and your chosen style?
I love all the R&B singers out
there! Doesn't matter who. I like everyone, but some
of my favorites are Mariah Carey, Christina
Aguilera, Leona Lewis, Jordan Sparks, Alicia Keys,
Ne-Yo, Brian McKnight, and many more. I am very open
minded when it comes to music and I can listen to
just about everything. I'd have to admit though,
nothing better can come close to my r&b!
Christina Lee: So
definitely I have a lot of R&B style and a bit mix
of pop and hip hop. Like I said, I'm very open
minded so who knows what I'll do or come up with
next :)
JiZO: What is your
motivation and where are you heading?
Christina Lee: My
motivation is in myself, my passion for music is
what keeps me going. It's the one thing I don't ever
get tired of. I had many late nights where I just
record for hours and hours until I feel like I get
it right. It's not easy and it requires a lot of
work and determination. The direction I'm heading is
to keep working on my music and to improve on any
areas of weakness. No one is perfect but I think
with enough practice and effort you can come pretty
close.
JiZO: I caught you
saying that you play the piano? How long have you
been doing that for?
Christina Lee: I played
Beethoven at the age of three! Yes, three! I was
born gifted with perfect pitch and my mom was a
piano teacher. I think all asian parents at some
point want their kid/kids to learn an instrument.
Haha. I took classical piano lessons for a couple of
years, then quit for a while and switched to
contemporary music and I'm still using it today :) I
like to play pretty ballads on my keyboard and sing
to them. Those are my favorite because you can
really get deep with the lyrics.
JiZO: What exactly is
the theme for your single, Hot Like Fire? Where did
you get that idea?
Christina Lee: Oh dear,
don't know really exactly where I got the idea. I
just heard the beat my friend Danny made and I just
thought of it randomly, oh this sounds hot like
fire! haha
It's basically about some girl
knowing that she's hot and everyone around her can
feel her heat.
I hate to be the example of the
song because I don't recall myself that I'm hot but
I'm sure other girls can sing along to it and admit
that they are! lol It's supposed to be really sexy,
flirty, and fun. Something the ladies can just dance
along to... ;)

JiZO: If you weren't
singing, what would you be doing right now?
Christina Lee: Nothing,
haha I'm just kidding... but to an extent I'm being
totally serious. I can only see myself involved with
music for my career and that's about it. Maybe as a
backup though, I might be interested in being a
psychologist, teacher, or a make-up artist. I'm
weird.
JiZO: What are
your biggest fears about being in the entertainment
industry?
Christina Lee: A lot of artists get deceived
in this industry because they don't pay close
attention to what's going on or they are not
knowledgeable of the entertainment laws/how the
contract goes. You have to be careful with the close
ties you get involved with because sometimes they
just want to rip you off and you aren't getting the
right amount of percentage that you should be
earning. I won't tolerate that and know not to mess
with those kind of people out there who want to just
use you and throw you away like garbage. Nope not
me!
JiZO: Do you have any
music to plug or any gigs lined up?
Christina Lee: The only
single I have available for now is Hot Like Fire,
which you can download here:
I'm planning on to make a demo
CD or work on an album so there will be more songs
coming up very shortly!
As far as the gigs go...you
tell me Jizo! Haha I'm up for doing more gigs as
long as people enjoy my music and want to see me
perform again.
JiZO: Any last words
before we wrap up the interview?
Christina Lee: Just
want to say thank you for all of those who are with
me and support me of what I'm doing. I'm going to
keep it up and continue to make some good music!! =)
